, it is an issue. it's an issue because in 2004 george bush won the presidency over john kerry on this issue. it's still an issue for gay republicans. if you think that it's not a civil right, if you think that in the last election that this issue was not debated, it was debated heatedly. when you take away a civil right, then you're taking away people's equality. when you give them a civil right, you're giving them equality. that's the difference. the republicans don't see it that way. they have to figure out a way -- they talk about a big tent and talk is nice but it means nothing unless you put it in your party platform. it means nothing when you say, i think you should have everything i have just not call it the same thing. separate but equal is not okay for the democrats and it's not okay for the republicans. until rubio around those people that are contenders for 2016 on the republican side get that through their thick heads, saying his faith teaches him that, does he understand that it's just as mortal of a sin according to the bible, according to leviticus, that if you eat shellfish your

the names. it's not super news but state senator john kerry, un ambassador susan rice. i asked the president whether or not he felt the republican criticisms and attacks on susan rice has sort of boxed him in a corner, make it so that he looks weak if he doesn't go ahead and nominate her. he tried to brush that aside but said, sang her praises and also said he hasn't made an announcement yet. so there's a bit of a trying to shuffle positions around here because one decision, if you name susan rice secretary of state then that opens the door, officials are saying, you could see kerry as defense secretary or he could bring in republican former senator chuck hagel is also a name for secretary and also potentially a name for c.i.a. as well. >> rose: in term of the treasury the name you most frequently higher is the chief of staff jack lou. is that the name you're hearing the most. >> that's the name we're hearing but it gets calculated because jack lou is a principal negotiator in the fiscal cliff talks. he was a negotiator back in the debt limit talks back in the summer of 2011 as well. this i

candidate, at one point, from hillary clinton to barack obama, from john kerry to john edwards, all of them, they all played for their plan with this simple phrase, "rolling back the bush tax cuts." they've been doing it for eight years. so politically, that's why the president has to draw that line in the sand. >> he draws that line in the sand, but harold ford, what happens when republicans, at least a small number of them, go ahead and raise taxes on the top 2% and then turn to the white house and say, okay. now we'll move. and then they have to talk about how they're going to slash spending in medicare, to save medicare, how they'll have to slash spending in medicaid to save medicaid. their political problem on the other side of this tax debate is so much bigger than the republican problem. they're being too clever by half here. >> both sides have complicated hands. and if the democrats, we achieve what the president and some democrats in the senate are asking for in a narrow way around taxes, you're absolutely right. just as an aside on the bush era, this is the first time we didn't go
